NCC Receives YEN Award Among Others

The Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Professor Umar Garba Danbatta has over the past week garnered several Awards in recognition of its contribution to the growth and development of the telecommunication industry and the Nigerian economy at large.

Some of the Awards include the Young Entrepreneurs Nigeria (YEN) Award; the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) ‘Approved Employer’ – Professional Development Award; and the Distinguished Friend of the Media Award from the Nigeria Union of Journalist.

The Young Entrepreneurs Nigeria Award was organized by His Imperial Majesty, Arole Oodua, Oni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, Ooni of Ife, to honour personalities and organizations that have made contributions in human employment and development.

According to YEN, the Award to the EVC was for his continuing support and provision of favourable regulation and environment that sustains direct and indirect employment, particularly for the youths who are enthusiastically engaged in ICT businesses across the nation.

Receiving the Award on behalf of the EVC, NCC’s Head of Public Relations, Mr Reuben Muoka expressed delight and appreciation for the Award, stating that the NCC’s mission is to support a market-driven telecommunications industry in order to allow private participation of both foreign and indigenous players in the industry.

Professor Danbatta earlier within the same week received the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) ‘Approved Employer’ – Professional Development Award. The Award was in recognition of its high standards of staff training and development, especially in the continuing professional development opportunities provided by NCC to its staff that are members of ACCA.

While presenting the Award to Professor Danbatta, Country Head, ACCA, Nigeria Thomas Isibor, described NCC as an iconic organization and, that ACCA has monitored the Commission’s performance in human development and its effective regulation of the industry over time before considering the Commission for this prestigious Award.  He indicated that ACCA evaluate employers across the globe in terms of staff development and progression and, ACCA has adjudged NCC qualified for the ‘Approved Employer’ Award.

“We are recognizing NCC for the investments it makes in human capital development and we are very proud with the partnership that we are forming; it is also the beginning of a relationship and I believe we can take it to great heights”, said Isibor.

The EVC/ CEO NCC, while receiving the Award stated that the task at the Commission requires diversified competencies and collective approach to attain desired objectives of ensuring qualitative and efficient telecommunications services, as well as universal access to services made available and affordable for all. Professor Danbatta informed the ACCA team about the Management’s 8-Point Agenda or Strategic Vision Plan envisioning NCC’s direction and objectives and, that strategic collaboration and partnership is one item among the 8-Point Agenda that the Commission accords seriousness.  On Broadband deployment, Prof. Danbatta talked about the licensing of Infracos to provide Broadband
