The controversial social media bill has been laid to rest – at least for now. The highly controversial bill dubbed – a Bill for an Act to Prohibit Frivolous Petition, and other matters Concerned therewith was discarded following a vote by lawmakers.
The bill which clearly stands in the way of President Buhari’s anticorruption agenda and is clearly an infringement of fundamental human rights was openly protested both online and offline by members of the Nigerian social media community.
The decision of the senate to withdraw the bill further underscores the importance of active participation of the masses in matters of politics. The death of the social media bill is clearly an indication of the power that lies in the office of the citizen.
