With the appointment of Asiwaju Bisi Adegbuyi as Post-Master General/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Postal Services (NIPOST), the stage is set for the accelerated implementation of the set plans and programmes that will set NIPOST on winning ways.
Adegbuyi , who, this week, replaces Enoch Ogun, hitherto acting Post-Master General (PMG), is saddled with the responsibility of ensuring that the laid-out vision of the supervisory Ministry, the Ministry of Information, is achieved.
One of such initiatives is One Network, a managed multi- stakeholder collaborative effort between the federal Ministry of Communications and the Central bank of Nigeria, (CBN), which was planned to create the most important centers for access to financial and citizen services under the financial inclusion programme.
The project is expected to transform NIPOST to a modern postal service through digital financial services in all its post offices across the country. Federal government institutions are to leverage on the platform to spread their services to rural communities. The project will position the NIPOST to look into other areas of money generation that goes beyond its public sector competitors, and away from the traditional mail movement services.
Aside the One Network project, NIPOST has remained a platform for mail delivery to other courier operators due to its cheap services and wider network around the globe.
According to the Head of the CRD, Mr Simeon Emeje, all NIPOST needs to do to achieve its target of contributing to the GDP and being globally competitive, is to ensure that the laid out Policy and provisions of the Postal Bill are implemented. He noted that the Ministerial plans for NIPOST, and the postal sector as a whole, is impeccable, and will shoot the industry up, if well implemented.
This is the task of the new PMG. The future of the Nigerian Postal Service has been laid and applauded by industry stakeholders.
According to the Minister of Communications, Barr. Adebayo Shittu, the task to make NIPOST profitable is of paramount importance.
