The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC ) believes that the growth in teledensity in the country’s telecommunication sector spells an opportunity for investors, local and foreign, to tap into the promise of adequate Return on Investments (RoI) in the Nigeria.

Speaking at a two-day event organised in Lagos by DigitalSENSE Africa Media, the Executive Vice Chairman (EVC) of the NCC, Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta disclosed that with a 107% Teledensity, Nigeria has become a viable investment opportunity.

Prof Danbatta, who was represented at the occasion by the Commission’s Deputy Director, Spectrum Administration,  Engr. Oluwatoyin Asaju further noted that telecommunications is the fifth most resilient sector in Nigeria.

He observed that there are investment opportunities in infrastructure; manufacturing and assembling of telecom gadgets; Broadband multimedia, among others.

He further noted that the Commission’s target is to ensure that telecom services are available at all times irrespective of location in the country.

Prof. Danbatta disclosed that the country has made remarkable impact in the growth of Broadband. According to him, the country has reached a 26% growth level, from 5%. He also noted that the country has already met some ITU Broadband targets, while pursuing its 30% penetration target by 2018.

The NCC reiterated that some of the steps put in place to achieve the 2018 target included the licensing of Infrastructure Companies; the auction of the 2.6GHz Spectrum; Fibre connectivity of the Internet Exchange Point and the promotion of wholesale pricing

Recent statistics from the Commission indicates that the country’s active telephone subscriber figure has gone beyond the 147.5 million, with connected lines exceeding 218.5 million.

As at January 2016, the total number of active subscribers was 151.4 million, but with the mandatory deactivation of unregistered/partially registered lines, the figure depreciated.
