To support COVID-19 related projects in response to the pandemic, Co-creation Hub (CcHUB), Africa’s foremost technology innovation centre, in partnership with Lagos State Science Research And Innovation Council (LASRIC) have announced a joint partnership focused on curbing the spread of this pandemic.

This is coming on the back of CcHUB’s recent call to the startup community across Africa to procure solutions to lessen the impact of the disease.

The immediate focus of Lagos state in curbing the spread of this pandemic is to alleviate issues such as contact tracking, last-mile communication, the supply chain for delivery of essential medication, food and healthcare materials.

CcHUB through its multidisciplinary team of product designers and engineers in CcHUB Design Lab in Kigali, Rwanda will provide funding and research to support the participants to explore the application of Human-centered Design (HCD) to proffer innovative solutions to flatten the curve of the spread of the deadly virus. For the project focused on Lagos, Nigeria, LASRIC will also fund novel solutions on COVID-19 by providing grant funding of $1000 to 6 applicants.

Since the announcement of the call for submissions, hundreds of responses have been sent in from various parts of Africa. Upon review of the applications received, CcHUB announced via Twitter the first set of startups moving on to receive support for execution. These are WellvisHealth and Pricepally.

WellvisHealth has built a screening tool that allows users to screen for symptoms and chat with certified Doctors; while Pricepally is a digital food cooperative that allows people to buy food in bulk or share bulk food with others.

With WellvisHealth, CcHUB promised: “We will support them to extend the tool’s functionalities to include heat mapping and symptoms logging as well as help scale their telemedicine support.”

Also on Pricepally, it noted: “We will work with the team to ensure essential food items are delivered to the doorsteps of customers especially in the event of a lockdown.”

In addition to the grant funding, LASRIC will review the most promising solution with the intention of investing $12,000 in a convertible note with an equity claim in possible future funding rounds. The terms of this follow-on investment will be decided on a case-by-case basis.
