After taking the saddle as the Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Nigeria’s Topmost Global bank, Zenith Bank, on June 1, 2024, Dame (Dr.) Adaora Umeoji OON, became the first female CEO the bank ever had. She was groomed from within.
Dame (Dr.) Adaora Umeoji, OON’s ascension to that enviable position was not because of her obvious elegance and beauty, but because of her deft; She has nearly three decades of cognate banking experience and over 21 years of extensive executive management expertise in Zenith Bank.
She had a shoe to fill, and expand, after taking over from Dr. Ebenezer Onyeagwu, whose 5-year tenure was tagged “very successful” by the bank’s Board. And one year after, she has proved a worthy successor and a goal-getter not for Zenith Bank, but also for the banking industry and the Nigerian financial sector. She has established herself as one of the leading figures within the banking sector in just one year.
Prior to this appointment, Dr. Umeoji has been the Deputy Managing Director of the bank since October 28, 2016
In the past one year, under her watch, Zenith Bank Plc has been named the “Best Bank in Nigeria” for 2025 in the Global Finance Best Banks Awards, at the 32nd annual awards spanning 36 countries across Africa. Publisher and Editorial Director of Global Finance, Joseph D. Giarraputo, noted that the Best Bank Awards recognise institutions for their strength in diversity of offerings, long-term stability, and technology-driven innovation. This is a testament to how much those attributes have remained at Zenith in the past One Year of Dr. Umeoji’s tenure.
Also under her watch, Zenith Bank have seen buoyancy in its balance sheet. The bank in the first quarter (Q1) of 2025 posted a ₦311b profit after tax, a marked difference from the N258 billion within same period previous year. While the bank’s Gross Earnings in Year Ended 31 December 2024 stood at ₦3.97 trillion (86% increase), theprofit before tax (PBT) rose by 67% reaching N1.33 trillion, from N796 billion in 2023. Net interest income increased by 135%, from N736 billion in 2023 to N1.73 trillion. She placed Zenith Bank as the highest net interest income bank in Nigeria.
These impressive results were driven by Dr. Umeoji ‘s top-line expansion and efficient treasury portfolio management drive.
At her first AGM as the bank’s GMD/CEO, the bank approved shareholders dividend of N195.67 billion, at N5.00 per share. She further made a remarkable remark that marked the success of her first year in office: “We have successfully completed our recapitalisation exercise, achieving 160 per cent subscription. Therefore, we are not under any pressure to raise additional funds. Zenith Bank has sufficient capital buffers and remains focused on organic growth while upholding strict corporate governance.”
Dame (Dr.) Adaora Umeoji came, saw, and improved upon, and conquered! As a warrior and Amazon that she is, her spears are still up for more conquests.
About Dame (Dr.) Adaora Umeoji
Born on February 8, 1976, Dame (Dr.) Adaora Umeoji is an alumnus of the prestigious Harvard Business School where she attended the Advanced Management Program (AMP) and an alumnus of Columbia Business School with a Certificate in the Global Banking Program. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology from the University of Jos, a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting and a First-Class honors in Law from Baze University, Abuja. She holds a Master of Laws from the University of Salford, United Kingdom, a Master in Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Calabar, and also has a doctorate in business administration from Apollos University, USA.
She holds a Certificate in Economics for Business from the prestigious MIT Sloan School of Management, USA, and has attended various management programmes in renowned Universities around the world including the Strategic Thinking And Management Programme at Wharton Business School, USA. She also attended the executive program in Strategic Management, and has a Certificate in Leading Global Business all from Harvard Business School, USA.
She is a fellow of notable professional bodies including the Chartered Banker Institute, UK, Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, Nigerian Institute of Management, Institute of Credit Administration, Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Nigeria, Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators, and the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators of Nigeria among others.
In 2022, the Federal Government of Nigeria honored Dr. Umeoji with Officer of the Order of the Niger, as a recognition of her contributions to nation building. She is a Peace Advocate of the United Nations (UN-POLAC).
She has impacted many lives through her philanthropic and humanitarian activities through her NGOs; Pink Breathe Cancer Foundation and the Adorable Foundation that educates, caters for Cancer patients and indigent children education especially the Girl-Child. Her contribution to humanity was recognized by the Sun Newspaper which recently bestowed on her the Humanitarian Services Icon Award for 2023.
As a result of her passion for promoting professionalism in the banking industry and improving the well-being of the less privileged, Dr. Adaora Umeoji, OON founded the Catholic Bankers Association of Nigeria (CBAN), a platform she uses to promote ethical banking and service to humanity.
She is a Lady of the Order of Knights of St. John International (KSJI), and was awarded a Papal Knight of the Order of St. Sylvester by His Holiness Pope Francis.
Dame (Dr.) Adaora Umeoji, OON, has been recognized, not just for her outstanding banking career and contributions to the development of an effective Nigerian financial services sector, but more importantly for her many philanthropic works and a sustained commitment over the years to improve the lives of less privileged persons.
Her Pink Breath Cancer Care Foundation undertakes several healthcare programs annually within the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria, to provide much needed medical care for persons living with cancer and other ailments. She also donates relief materials and provides free healthcare to internally displaced persons nationwide, through several other intervention initiatives. Dame Adaora Umeoji donated a Church building to the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja and has held yuletide programs for nearly two decades, which have positively impacted the lives of over 5,000 indigent children.
