In trying to create gender balance and ensure that women are adequately empowered to contribute their quota to the growth of Nigeria’s cybersecurity sector, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), has joined forces with Women in Cybersecurity (WiCyS), to organise a capacity-building programme for women in cybersecurity.
The training, themed “Empowering Women in Cybersecurity,” held in Abuja as part of activities commemorating International Women’s Day . The initiative highlighted the agency’s commitment to expanding opportunities for women and strengthening the country’s digital security ecosystem.
Delivering a keynote address on behalf of the Director General of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa, Dr. Ayodele Bakare described cybersecurity as a strategic pillar for Nigeria’s digital transformation . He emphasised the urgent need to equip more women with relevant technical skills, practical knowledge and access to career opportunities in the fast-growing cybersecurity industry.
According to him, boosting women’s participation in cybersecurity is not only a matter of inclusion but also a critical step toward enhancing innovation, improving resilience against cyber threats and safeguarding national digital infrastructure.
Participants at the event engaged in interactive sessions and hands-on training designed to build competence, inspire confidence and encourage greater female representation in the cybersecurity workforce. Organisers expressed optimism that sustained collaboration between public institutions and professional groups would help close the gender gap and foster a more secure digital future for the country.
