From over 2 billion monthly active users reported in 2022, Instagram has hit a major milestone of 3 billion monthly active users (MAUs) as of September 2025.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the achievement on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, via a post on the Meta-owned platform, Threads.

In another announcement, Instagram’s Head, Adam Mosseri, noted that the recent growth has been primarily fueled by the popularity of features like Reels, private messaging, and content recommendations.

To capitalize on this growth, Meta is placing a renewed emphasis on these features. The company plans to test a redesigned navigation bar that gives more prominence to Reels and messaging.

Instagram’s new user figure places it alongside Meta’s other major platforms, Facebook and WhatsApp, which have also surpassed 3 billion MAUs.

To commemorate the achievement, Instagram commissioned a custom art piece from artist Giannilee, which draws on themes of community and technology.

Crossing 3 billion monthly users not only cements Instagram’s place as one of the largest social platforms on the planet but also underscores how deeply it has embedded itself into everyday life, spanning cultures, age groups, and interests.

The social media App plans on giving more power to users with choices on how to navigate the App.

In the coming months, users will have more control over Reels, with the power to tell Instagram what topics they want to see more or less of, creating a more personalized feed.

A cleaner layout will also allow easy swiping between the Home feed, Reels, and Messages, making discovery and communication smoother.

Instagram is testing a Reels-first mobile design in India and South Korea, two of its most vibrant communities. The update lets people dive straight into entertaining content while still offering a dedicated “Following” tab to catch up on posts from friends and favourite creators. Interestingly, this test looks very similar to Instagram’s new iPad experience, and insights from these countries will shape future global rollouts.
