Nigeria and the Republic of Cameroon have entered into an understanding with regards to exchange of ideas in the telecommunications sector, as a delegation from the Telecommunications Regulatory Board of Cameroon visited the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in Abuja on Wednesday.
The team led by the Director General of ART, Philemon Zoo Zame, was received by the Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida. The meeting of the two regulators reflects a growing trend of regional collaboration among African telecom regulators seeking to strengthen digital governance and improve industry performance.
The benchmarking engagement highlights Nigeria’s increasing influence in Africa’s telecommunications ecosystem, particularly in areas such as consumer protection, spectrum management, broadband expansion, and regulatory innovation.
The Nigerian regulator has, over the years, stood out as a reference on telecommunications governance through its policies, programmes and initiatives in growing the telecoms ecosystem in Nigeria. This has influenced many African nations, and propelled other African regulators to collaborate with the NCC.
Aside winning past Africa Regulator of the Year Awards, the NCC, in 2025, won the 2025 World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) prize for its project, the Digital Awareness Programme (DAP). These exemplary performances have placed Nigeria as a reference point for Africa’s telecoms regulation.
The visit by Cameroon’s ART will present collaborative opportunities for Nigeria and Cameroon, especially as it regards rural telephony penetration and Africa’s evolving digital evolution.
Beyond institutional learning, the meeting also underscores the importance of cross-border cooperation in addressing common industry challenges, including cybersecurity, infrastructure deficits, quality of service, and emerging technologies such as 5G and artificial intelligence.
